Newsies delivers stellar entertaining show
Review by Max D’Ambrosio
Disney’s Newsies is a shining example of musical theatre, a fulsome shot to the heart filled with life, love, and lessons of paramount importance.
The story carries themes of social justice and personal perseverance that resonate strongly in any era, and a charming cast brings those grand themes down to earth. These well-portrayed characters express their struggles – everyone’s struggles – in a stylized yet relatable manner.
The cast carries off the irrepressible energy of the New York newsboys perfectly. Rambunctious mayhem fills the stage during the many impressive song and dance numbers, suddenly giving way to periods of more synchronized motion or stillness.
The whole ensemble’s singing voices and dance skills are top-notch while the ebb and flow of their movements perfectly match the plot’s momentum.
Success on the physical side of things is balanced by an equally great accomplishment in more abstract elements. From the broadest slapstick turns to the most understated tone and body language cues, the acting and emoting on display here is a powerful force that draws the audience into the story.
The Bottom Line
This production of Newsies is truly stellar – no significant weak spots and plenty of shining points of excellence.
You’ll find plenty of reasons to cheer; for rousing songs and athletic feats, and for heart-tugging moments of drama and inspiration.
