The Tony nominations are in and some of the hottest shows of the 2016 Broadway season will make it to Vancouver on a national tour or produced by a local company.

Here’s our take on the shows vying for Tony Award gold – even the show that’s favoured to win it all.

Tuck Everlasting

Tuck EverlastingIts title characters find eternal life, but the Tony Award nominated musical Tuck Everlasting can’t find an audience, the essence of life on Broadway.  The production closes at the end of the week. Though the musical might find a second life as a bus and truck tour, it could do with a major overhaul and a lesson from nearby The Color Purple in connecting with audience.  Read more of our review

The Color Purple

Review of the Broadway revival of The Color Purple by Stephen Andrew at VancouverTheatre.ca

The Color Purple is a stark reminder of the social structure of the Southern United Sates in the 1930s when black women were treated as property meant only for serving men.

It may seem like a strange choice of a story for a Broadway musical, but the power of this show is in its commitment to the truth and its fearless journey down a very dark road. Read more of our review
